THE BEST AND WORST OF QB DRAFTING
April 25, 2010
Best addition by a team: John Skelton in Arizona. Not a big investment, but an excellent upside for the small school passer. Skelton will be developmental insurance for Leinart. The reality is, if Skelton was at USC, he would be a first rounder. Runner-Up > Jonathon Crompton to San Diego.
Best situation for a player: Jimmy Clausen in Carolina. Clausen has the chance to take over as starter and represents franchise QB value for Carolina as well. I see this playing out very similar to the Chad Henne in Miami situation. Runner-Up > Rusty Smith in Tennessee.
Worst addition by a team: Tim Tebow to Denver. I like Tebow and was an admirer of his work in Florida, but for the Broncos now as a first rounder, I can’t see it. What does it mean for Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn. Quinn should have been given the chance to become the starter and the man in Colorado, but instead, he is already looking over his shoulder.
Worst situation for a player: Mike Kafka in Philadelphia. I love Kafka and I love that Philadelphia drafted him, but considred the presence of newly anointed starter Kevin Kolb, it seems that Kafka is fighting uphill at any chance of becoming a starter – at least in Philadelphia. Maybe under Andy Reid’s tutelage, Kafka can become a commodity of interest to another team down the track (see Charlie Whitehurst). Runner-Up > Tony Pike in Carolina.
Biggest risk: Tebow, Tebow, Tebow.
QB under the most pressure: Tim Tebow, Denver. The Broncos traded up into the first round to draft Tebow and given his prominence in media discussions, Josh McDaniels may have hitched his Head Coach job to Tebow’s wagon.
Best Value Selection: Colt McCoy in the 3rd looks pretty good.
Worst Value: Joe Webb to Minnesota. Did they even have to draft him? He could have been had as an undrafted free agent.
Best Un-Drafted Player: Jarrett Brown. How this player could be overlooked is beyond me. He has as much upside as any QB in the draft and the team that gets him as a FA will get a bargain. Darryl Clark also represents value as an Undrafted FA.
